Sheryl Allen named associate dean for medical student affairs

Sheryl Allen, M.D., associate professor of clinical emergency medicine and clinical pediatrics, has been named associate dean for medical student affairs. She began her new duties July 15.
An open house to welcome Dr. Allen will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the VanNuys Medical Science Building, Room 122 C/D. Refreshments will be served.
As associate dean for medical student affairs, Dr. Allen will serve as the senior administrative leader for the Office of Medical Student Affairs and oversee comprehensive services and programming to support the development and academic success of medical students at each of the school’s nine campuses.
Dr. Allen joined the IU faculty in 2008. In 2010, she was named assistant dean for diversity affairs in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
In that position, Dr. Allen assisted the school with recruitment and retention of residents from underrepresented backgrounds as junior faculty members. She also worked with medical students as a faculty advisor for the Student National Medical Association.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Northwestern University, a doctorate from the IU School of Medicine and a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Allen succeeds Rakesh Mehta, M.D., associate professor of clinical medicine, who will return full-time to his work in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology-Oncology.
