Showalter Scholars program seeks applications; changes eligibility

Feb. 14, 2013

David Wilkes, M.D., executive associate dean for research affairs and August M. Watanabe Professor of Medical Research, has announced a new addition to the IU School of Medicine programs supported by the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust Fund.

The Showalter Scholars program will be limited to full-time IU School of Medicine faculty members who, at the date of nomination, hold the rank of associate professor (tenure optional) or have held the rank of professor for not more than one year.

For many years, the Showalter Trust has supported young investigators through the one-year Showalter Trust Grants, as well as supporting two more senior faculty with the Showalter Professorships. The move to support associate and newly appointed faculty members seeks to recognize and reward research faculty whose scientific expertise and productivity have resulted in significant contributions to the School of Medicine and the greater research community.

Candidates should have a track record of success with R01-equivalent funding, or have demonstrated comparable success with predominately investigator-initiated clinical research. Evidence of collaboration within or outside the university must also be documented. Please note that Showalter Trust provisions prohibit funding of psychiatric or psychology research or researchers.

Four applicants will be selected each year by the IU School of Medicine’s research deans to bear the title of IU School of Medicine Showalter Scholar for three consecutive years.

To support their research programs, Showalter Scholars will receive $25,000 from the Trust in the first year, $25,000 from the sponsoring department in the second, and $25,000 from the School of Medicine in the third.

The new program provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding research faculty and leverage a $25,000 investment into $75,000 worth of project support.

All application materials should be converted to PDF format and submitted via email to iusmoper@iupui.edu.

For more information on the application process and criteria, guidelines have been posted on the IUSM Administrative Services C3 intranet site

C3 stands for Connect, Communicate, Collaborate. This tool is a central source for news, events and announcements and a primary hub for critical reports and other documents. If prompted to log in to the C3 site, input your IU username with ads\ in front of it, and the password for your IU email account.

Should you have any difficulty accessing the site, email iusmoper@iupui.edu or contact the ISTM Help Desk at istmhelp@iupui.edu or 317-274-5336.
