Haywood named new assistant dean for medical student affairs

Antwione Haywood, Ph.D., has been named assistant dean for medical student affairs in the Office of Medical Student Affairs at the IU School of Medicine. He began his new role May 30.

As the assistant dean for medical student affairs, Dr. Haywood works closely with Sheryl Allen, M.D., associate professor of clinical emergency medicine and pediatrics and associate dean for medical student affairs at the IU School of Medicine, to offer comprehensive services and programming to support the development and academic success of medical students at each of the school’s nine campuses. 

Dr. Haywood is a solution-focused professional with a comprehensive background in assessment, student development, student transition and strategic planning. He has oversight of, and works closely with, staff in the MSA office on programs related to student events, student co-curricular activities, student records and financial aid services.

Originally from Los Angeles, Dr. Haywood holds a bachelors of science degree in business from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.; a master's degree in higher education administration from the University of Kansas; and a doctorate in higher education and student affairs from IU.

In 2012, he was named the named the recipient of the Joseph P. Cangemi Dissertation Award. 

Prior to joining IU, Dr. Haywood served as the associate director for student success at Purdue University.
