The Curriculum Council Steering Committee, led by Alan Ladd, M.D., associate professor of surgery, has officially endorsed the current recommendations for curricular reform as presented by the Curriculum Reform 2.5 Team.

Alan Ladd, M.D., is chair of the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.

The approval followed the team's presentation to the steering committee on a summary report compiling feedback from the IU School of Medicine community on the proposed framework for a new curriculum and realignment of the Competency curriculum. This feedback was collected during a number of opportunities, including a series of face-to-face and online forums.

The original proposal and summary report are available on the Curriculum Reform 2.5 Oncourse site.

The Curriculum Council Steering Committee formally endorsed the Curricular Reform 2.5 Team’s proposal for the framework of the new curriculum toward the M.D. degree program, as well as its plans for ongoing development; implementation is expected to begin in August 2014.

In doing so, the committee formally recognized and offered a statement of appreciation for the foundational work to date, as reflected in the work of the faculty, student, resident and staff participants through the Curricular Reform 1.0 teams, 2.0 teams and 2.5 leadership team.

In addition, the committee endorsed the plan for the IUSM to adapt its current Competency system to align with the designated six Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education competencies through acceptance of the Curricular Reform 2.5 Team’s restructuring recommendations, which will be incorporated into future curriculum reform toward the M.D. degree. Aspects of the committee's deliberation and consideration of the proposed curriculum and its minutes are available for review through the Curriculum Council Steering Committee’s Oncourse site

Maryellen Gusic, M.D., executive associate dean for educational affairs, the Dolores and John Read Senior Professorship in Medical Education, and Professor of Pediatrics, will deliver a presentation on the Curricular Reform process during the IU School of Medicine spring faculty meeting from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Riley Outpatient Center auditorium.
