IUPUI Campus Health to offer free flu shots starting Sept. 2
Aug. 14, 2014
Editor's Note: Due to an unforeseen delay in the shipment of flu vaccine, the flu clinic dates previously publicized below in the Aug. 14 issue of InScope are no longer accurate. Flu shots will now be available in late September and all flu shot clinics will be held in October and November. A new schedule will be shared on the IUPUI Campus Health website and through InScope as soon as it is available.
IUPUI Campus Health will again offer free flu shots to the IUPUI community during the 2014-2015 flu season.
All IUPUI faculty, staff and students, including members of the IU School of Medicine, can obtain a flu shot at Campus Health (Coleman Hall), IUPUI Campus Center Student Health (students only) or outreach flu vaccination clinics across campus starting Sept. 2.
IU School of Medicine faculty, staff, students, fellows and residents considered employees, affiliated physicians, volunteers, students, contractors and vendors at IU Health and Eskenazi Health -- or who provide care or interview patients, perform any clinical research or whose primary office is located in an IU Health or Eskenazi hospital -- are required to receive an influenza vaccination this flu season.
The mandatory vaccination policy at IU Health and Eskenazi Health also affects faculty, staff and students at the IU schools of nursing, dentistry and University Human Resources. All IUPUI faculty, staff and students required to have a flu shot are required to receive a vaccine by Nov. 21.
IUPUI Campus Health will hold a number of outreach flu shot clinics across the IUPUI campus in September and October. Several are specifically aimed at IUSM faculty, staff and students:
- Sept. 24 and 25: VanNuys Medical Science Building -- 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Oct. 6: IU Neurosciences Research Building -- noon to 2 p.m.
- Oct. 16: Health Information and Translational Sciences Building -- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Oct. 29: Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Center -- 7 to 9 a.m.
A session for IUSM residents is also scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 23 at the IU Health Methodist Hospital Emergency Department.
Hours for vaccination at IUPUI Campus Health (Coleman Hall) are 7:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays. Hours for IUPUI Campus Center Student Health (CE 213) are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. Only students may receive vaccination at the IUPUI Campus Center.
A valid JagTag ID is required to receive a free flu shot. IUPUI students with insurance through Aetna or Anthem, including medical students, are also asked to show their health insurance cards prior to receiving a flu shot. All students will be able to receive a free flu shot regardless of whether or not they provide an insurance card.
IUPUI faculty, staff or students who are required to have a flu vaccine, but have a medical contraindication to the vaccine, must submit a Flu Vaccine Medical Exemption request by Sept. 30. This form may also be used for those who wish to request a religious exemption.
IU Health employees who wish to submit a request medical or religious exemption from the vaccine must do so by Sept. 4.
IUPUI Campus Health is charged with tracking flu shot compliance for IUSM house staff and students. House staff and students who opt to receive vaccination from IU Health, a personal physician or elsewhere must submit their flu shot consent form to IUPUI Campus Health at healthsv@iupui.edu or via fax at 317-278-6929.
Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center employees are encouraged, but not required, to receive an influenza vaccination.
